2018 Humboldt Outlaw Kart Season Begins
Cliff Myer took the win in the 500cc/open karts |
Eureka, CA (April 25, 2018) – Outlaw kart racing returned to the Redwood Acres Fairground for the first time this past weekend, April 14th. It’s the third time that the outlaws have raced at the fairgrounds but the first under of the Humboldt Outlaw Kart banner. The same divisions that have been racing on the 1/10th-mile dirt oval returned; beginner box stocks, box stocks, old fart karts, 125/250cc and 500cc/open karts. The opening day’s races were presented by Eureka Payments.
The heat race in the Champagne Attorney Service beginner box stocks was Jack Myers. Corbin Green jumped to the led on the restart before spinning and surrendering the lead to Chayce Smith. The restart saw Smith pull out to a substantial lead while Myers, Green and Aaliyah Hughs battled for the second position. There were two more yellows in the race which bunched the field. Each time, Smith was able to pull away from the field. At the finish it was Smith taking the victory.
The Williamson Financial box stock heat race was won by Derek Kessler. T.J. Sorrels took the lead at the start of the main event which saw several cautions. The first saw Janice Walters lose power on the front stretch. The second came when Madison Donovan slid off the track. The restart featured an exciting battle between Sorrels and Dryver Dothage. At one point, Dothage got too high in turn four and nearly slid off the track. The final handful of laps proved to be stirring.
While racing for the lead, Sorrels spun with Dothage going off the track to avoid. Keegan Bounds was now the leader but his kart had issues. Sorrels regained the lead. Dothage’s final attempt at the victory sadly came up short as he went off track. Sorrels was able to take the checkered flag.
Jordan Miclette in the Fortuna Wheel & Brake old fart kart heat race. The main event proved to be a different story as Nick Ford jumped into the lead at the start. Ford would lead wire-to-wire to claim the victory over Miclette.
The Wes Green Landscaping 125/250cc kart heat race winner proved to be Landen Green. The main event proved to be no different for Green. He was able to quickly take the lead at the green flag and even with problems with his kart, he was still able to maintain the lead. Behind him, MKinzy Uselton and Kloey Smith had a spirited battle for the second position. In the end, Smith was able to gain the upper hand for the second position. The finish saw Green win over Smith and Uselton.
Cliff Myer was victorious in the NorCal Automotive 500cc/open kart division. Myer led the open two laps of the main event before Chelsea Champagne moved to the lead. Champagne had the advantage all race long in spite of two caution flags due to spins by Myer. While taking the white flag on the last lap, Champagne’s kart lost power which gave Myer the win.
The Humboldt Outlaw Karts return to Redwood Acres Fairgrounds on May 19th. For more information on the karts please visit the website, www.humboldtoutlawkarts.com

2018 season at Redwood Acres Raceway nears
Eureka, CA (April 17, 2018) – The first race of the 2018 racing season at Redwood Acres Raceway is quickly closing in. The season opening event on Saturday April 28th will be Root 101 Nursery Night at the Races and will be the start of what should be another thrilling year of racing on the 3/8-mile paved oval.
One of the unfortunate changes of 2018 is the loss of the Thunder Roadster division which had struggled with its car count the past several seasons. In its place is a brand-new division, the Bandoleros. These cars have a wheelbase of 70 inches with a 570CC Briggs and Stratton Vanguard engine powering the 550-pound machines. Due to the size of the race track, the engines will be restricted to allow safer competition. The Bandoleros are designed to be a stepping stone for young drivers who are looking to move on from quarter-midget or outlaw kart racing. Drivers as young as 8 and as old at sixteen will be competing in the new division.
The Northcoast Lighting And Electric Legends will return for their third year of racing at RAR. This division is another stepping stone for drivers who are looking to eventually make the transition to bombers or late models. 2017 champion Tyler Peach used his experience in the roadrunner class to claim his title. Going into 2018, Peach will be the favorite to repeat but doing so should be an even tougher task.
Daniel Buell and Nick Ford waged a spirited battle for the Compass Community Credit Union roadrunner division last year. Only 13 points separated champion Buell and runner-up Ford. The new season could bring new players into the fold. Both car and driver in the roadrunner class or similar divisions such as hornets, four bangers and jammers who are also members of the North Coast Racing Association will have free entry. Non-members will be required to purchase pit passes to race. Membership forms are available on the track’s website www.redwoodacresracing.com
Drivers in the Humboldt Hydroponics mini stock division will have their hands full if they want to beat Brett Murrell in 2018. Murrell was an almost unstoppable force in 2017 as he won six times and finished second three times. His strong effort helped him take the division’s track championship in spite of him missing the first race of the season.
The Fortuna Wheel And Brake bomber division saw several different drivers in victory circle last year. John Lally took the championship with three victories and had a sizeable margin in the point standings. Things should be much closer this season with Kolby Jackson and Bethany Rapp looking for their first wins while Jim Redd will also be one to watch every race.
It’s certain that the Mid-City Motor World Super 6 Late Models will provide a lot of action throughout the upcoming season. Mic Moulton only won once in 2017 but steady finishes earned him the championship for the series. Brandon White was a force with three wins including both big-time races the Don Graham Memorial Firecracker 100 and the Dennis Wendt Memorial Mid-City Motor World 100. While both drivers will be favorites this season, they’ll also have to contend with David Henderson who won twice and Marty Walsh who surprisingly went winless in 2017.
2018 will feature a new start time for the opening of the grandstands and the start of the races. Grandstands will now open at 5:00PM while racing will begin at 5:30PM. All five divisions will be in action. For more information on the new season including rules, race and points results, visit Redwood Acres Raceway’s official website www.redwoodacresracing.com

Uselton looking to improve upon a successful 2017
Eureka, CA (April 14, 2018) – With only two weeks left before the start of the 2018 season at Redwood Acres Raceway, MKinzy Uselton and her number 29 team enter the year with excitement and higher expectations. It will be her third year of racing on RAR’s pavement in the Legends division.
In 2017, Uselton greatly improved on her rookie season which was her first time ever behind the wheel of any racecar. Last year, Uselton came up a bit short of winning the track championship with a second-place finish in the standings. Her best finish was a second on the July 10th race. She also scored her first victory of any kind in the May 13th heat race.
2018 also marks the return to outlaw kart racing for the young driver. It will be her second year on the dirt as she will once again be racing in the 250 class. The first race of the year for the Humboldt Outlaw Karts is this coming weekend, Saturday April 21st at the Redwood Acres Fairgrounds.
The Uselton race team would like to thank their partners whose support is greatly appreciated; Jim Redd Four Star Realty, John’s Used Cars & Wreckers, Site Master West, Joe’s Auto Glass, Higgins Brothers, Bayside Realty, Howard’s Body Shop, The Bud Sisters Salve, Happy Donuts Express Asian Food and Eureka Payments.
